Matthias Schoenaerts picks up romantic speed after the brilliant, but decidedly unromantic, Bullhead — this time as a single father drifting down to the south of France to try and get a new life started with the help of his sister and various and sundry odd jobs. Then the best thing that ever happened to him shows up for prime time and he goes through hell and high water to stabilize it. Definitely not your average date movie. Perhaps a bit too gritty for the Jane Austen crowd, which may be why it’s so compelling to the rest of us. It got a ten-minute standing ovation at the end of its screening at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
