Mash up [ China Daily ] China is considering building a high-speed railway up through Siberia and across the Bering Strait to Alaska, Canada and the United States. According to an expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, in the not so distant future people will be able take the train from Beijing to Washington, D.C.
The proposed journey will start from China’s northeast region, cross Siberia to Bering Strait, and run across the Pacific Ocean by undersea tunnel to reach Alaska, from Alaska to Canada, then on to the US. To cross the Bering Strait will require an estimated 200km (125 miles) undersea tunnel, the existing technology will also be used on a Fujian to Taiwan high-speed railway tunnel.
A Bering Strait tunnel would be the world’s longest undersea tunnel – four times the length of the English Channel Tunnel now connecting Continental Europe and the British Isles.
